Study on Smoke Exhaust Systems for Long Highway Tunnels in Fire

Smoke control system is necessary for long highway tunnel to ensure peoples safety in case of fire. Base on working principles of longitudinal and central smoke exhaust systems, the advantages and shortcomings of them for long highway tunnels are analyzed, and an innovative combined smoke exhaust system is developed. The effects of these smoke exhaust systems are compared by computational fluid dynamics simulation of a fire in Cangling tunnel. The results indicate that central smoke exhaust system has the best performance and is recommended for long highway tunnels, for it has little influence on smoke segregation and can confine smoke within 300m wherever the fire location is. Considering the high cost of central smoke exhaust system, combined smoke exhaust system may find the balance between safety and cost.
