Study on Combustion Performances and the Thermal Stability and the Char Formation of Brominated Epoxy Resin and Sb2O3 in PBT

Combustion performances (UL94), the thermal stability, the char formation and the flame-retarded mechanism of PBT added in brominated epoxy resin and antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) as synergist agent were studied using Cone Calorimeter (CONE), Thermogravimetic analysis (TG) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra (FTIR). The experimental results show that the heat release rate (HRR) and the thermal decomposition activation energy of the flame-retarded PBT can be largely decreased. Brominated epoxy resin and Sb2O3 can advance the flame-retarded effects of PBT, and the smaller is particle size of Sb2O3. the better is the flameretarded effects of the flame-retarded PBT, but brominated epoxy resin system has poor suppression smoke effects so that users must pay attention to this weakness.
