Fire Laws and Evacuation Style in the Fuchun River Navigation Tunnel

A project including the construction of a navigation tunnel is proposed to solve the shipping bottleneck problem caused by Qililong power station dam and lock in the Fuchun River. The understanding of fire in navigation tunnel is important, because ship fires often happen and the fires in highway and railway tunnel caused serious casualties and economic loss. However, the research on fire in navigation tunnel is nearly blank for this type of tunnel is rare in the world. In this paper, the fire scenarios in the Fuchun River navigation tunnel are analyzed first; then, the fire development, smoke movement and temperature distribution are investigated by numerical simulation and empirical formula; finally, the reasonable evacuation style is proposed and proved based on fire laws and evacuation analyses. The results show that, the fire size of cargo ship in the Fuchun River navigation tunnel is controlled by ventilation, the peak heat release rate (HRR) is about 4S0MW and the stable HRR is about 150MW to 200MW under natural ventilation. So the longitudinal ventilation wont be activated in order not to enlarge fire size and turbulent smoke segregation effect before complete evacuation. The 10m visibility of smoke descends to 2m high level at fire position needs 15min for passenger ship fire and 10min for cargo ship fire. The maximum temperature under the vault is 1349C and will descend to about 780℃ for the reduction of HRR from peak value to stable value. It is suggested that 1.5m wide sidewalks along the both sides of the waterway serve as evacuation route. Passenger ship should be equipped with one 2m wide, or two or more 1m wide temporary walkways. Cargo ship can be equipped with only one 1m wide temporary walkway.
