Experiment Study on Influence of Size Distribution and Concentration on Magnesium Powders Explosion

In order to prevent and mitigate magnesium dust explosions, the explosion ability of four types of magnesium powders was characterized experimentally in 20L sphere. Excepting type I, the maximum overpressure (pmax ) and maximum rate of pressure rise ((dp /dt)max) almost appear at a dust concentration of 1500g/m3 in the 20L sphere apparatus. The two parameters increase rapidly with an increase in dust concentration in the lower ranges, and then decrease gradually in the higher ranges. It was also found that a smaller particle size led to a higher maximum pressure and rate of pressure rise. The results of X-ray analysis were shown that the nitrification between nitrogen and magnesium powder occurred synchronously with its oxidation during the explosion.
