Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics for Manufactured Gas Dispersion Modeling and Leakage Consequence Analysis

The manufactured gas related leakage accidents have raised great public attention. Population crowed cities are vulnerable to the toxic or combustible manufactured gas as it has widely used as municipal fuel and/or energy supply. Consequence analyzes of the accidental dispersion of the manufactured gas need to be presented forward, especially for the complex civil environment which most simple models are hardly to be applicable. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) type of model is powerful tool in gas dispersion study and customizable to particular complex transport environment or urban conditions. In the view of the specialty of the manufactured gas of neutral weight in average, the dispersion behavior were captured by the CFD model with a necessary amendment and supplementary analyzes on the base of the hazardous area defining and its flammable range, which is interacted by all of its components. Effect of the leakage velocity of the continuous jet source was emphatically discussed in the scenario background of the high altitude city of Kunming, China with building blockages and its atmospheric conditions were settled. Besides the effect of the buildings to the pattern of the plumes, it was concluded that the relative leakage velocity can significantly influence the manufactured gas di (fusion as a key parameter of the source term.
