Safety Testing and Assessment of Existing Reinforced Concrete Plate Girder Bridges before and after Rehabilitation
Reinforced concrete plate girders were widely used as the superstructure of short and medium-span bridges before 1980s in China. After in-site static load testing of these bridges, it was found that the safety of these bridges had deteriorated due to increasing traffic flow and heavy trucks, and they can not satisfy the safety requirement of the code specification. Rebuilding these bridges is neither realistic nor scientific. To meet their safety requirement of this kind of bridges, two similar plate girder bridges, one rehabilitated by externally bonding CFRP laminate and the other rehabilitated by steel plate, were tested. The test results show that the both the deflection and strain check factors of the testing plate girders after rehabilitation had a great reduction compared to that of these plate girders before rehabilitation, therefore these bridges satisfy the safety requirement of the code after rehabilitation. The stiffness of CFRPstrengthened plate girders increased much bigger than that of steel plate-strengthened ones. Moreover, bonding CFRP laminate is much more convenient and cheap than bonding steel plate in construction. Externally bonding CFRP laminate has significant advantages over bonding steel plate in rehabilitating reinforced concrete plate girder bridges.
