Investigation on Seismic Response of Continuous Skew Bridges

Employing response spectral analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis, the seismic response of a 3span bridge with the skew angle of 60° is compared with that of the straight bridge, which demonstrates that the pounding between the girder and the abutment, leading to large sliding displacements and in-plane rotation, is non-ignorable. The study also concludes that the first longitudinal mode period of skew bridges is lower, in comparison with that of the straight bridge. Besides, coupling phenomenon appears in the participating mass ratio and the internal forces of the piers. These properties of the skew bridge become more notable as the stiffness of the bearings increases. According to the study, several recommendations for the seismic design of skew bridges are suggested.
