Application of Strain Time Histories Measurement in Fatigue-Load Model of Highway Bridges

Fatigue phenomenon caused by numerous repeated cyclic stresses due to traffic loading is one of the main dominant factors that affects the fatigue reliability and durability of highway bridges with steel or composite structures. In this paper, on the basis of W1M data collected from six toll stations on Jing-Fu highway which is one of the busiest highways in China, a fatigue-load model was developed. In order to validate the model, strain time histories were obtained through field strain measurements for 3 existing bridges on this highway. For equivalent strain amplitude, comparison was made between the value obtained from the measurement and those calculated on the basis of the introduced fatigueload model at Jianhe Bridge and l.iuji Bridge, and the maximum error between them is 10%. This work indicates that the fatigue damage accumulation caused by the introduced fatigue-load model can well represent the actual condition, and, the way of developing fatigue-load model which is based on WIM data is feasible for highway bridges in China.
