Ultraviolet Durability of TiO2 Coated Kevlar Fibres
The effect of TiOi sol coating process on the ultraviolet durability of Kevlar fibres was investigated. TiO2 sol was prepared from Titanium Tetrabutoxide, HCI and acetic acid were used as a catalyst for the peptisation and complexing agent respectively. The molar fractions of Ti(OBu)4, acetic acid, HCI and deionised water in the prepared solution were 1:4:0.15:166. Dynamic light scattering result shows that after aging for 3 days, most of nano-TiO2 particles in the sol were about 15-45 nm in diameter. Furthermore, The obtained sol was coated on Kevlar fibre surface with the help of ultrasonication to form thin nano-TiO2 film, which has a thickness of about 300 nm observed under SEM. Results of mechanical measurement show that after exposing to UV light for 160 h, the fibres without TiO2 coating had deteriorated and turned to be powders, whereas 37.5 percent of strength and 41.2 percent of break extension still remained for the TiO2 coated fibre.
