Pedestrian Refuge Island in the Improvement of Pedestrian Crossing Safety

Characterized as less costly, practical and convenient, pedestrian refuge islands are commonly used in assisting pedestrians to cross the street. Firstly, the paper analyzes the functions of refuge islands in terms of pedestrian crossing safety and walking environment improvement. It is further illustrated that refuge islands can create more acceptable gaps for a safe crossing. Then, the paper discusses three forms of refuge islands, namely, splitter islands, refuge islands at median locations of the street and refuge islands formed by extending motor/non-motor separation strips. The three refuge forms, as well as staggered crosswalks, are explained with photos and figures. In addition, the paper proposes the typical conditions where refuge islands are most beneficial and raises attention to related noteworthy problems. Conclusions are finally reached. The pedestrian refuge island is an effective measure to make crossing much easier and a proper use of the refuge island is bound to improve pedestrian safety.
