Numerical Simulation of Wheel Wear and Its Influence on Vehicle Dynamics
The wheel/rail wear is one of the main factors which affect the lateral stability and running quality of high-speed trains. The wheel/rail wear mainly includes the wears of wheel tread, rail profile, wheel out of roundness, rail corrugation, etc. Among them, the wheel tread wear and rail profile wear have significant effects on vehicle stability, while the wears of wheel out-of-round (OOR) and rail corrugation have large influence on vehicle vertical dynamics. In order to know well the relationship between the wheel wear and the running performance of high-speed trains, the dynamic model of vehicle system and the models of wheel tread wear and OOR are set up. The numerical simulation for wheel wear and its influence on vehicle system dynamics is undertaken. It can be seen from the simulation results that the wheel tread wear will reduce the critical speed greatly, while there are many factors that influence the wear, including the vehicle suspension parameters and the wheel/rail contact geometry. The OOR wear will increase the vehicle vertical vibration, and further influence the fatigue life of vehicle system. The dynamic performance of the vehicle system can be improved by adopting proper suspension parameters and better matching of wheel/rail profiles.
