Study on Fire Behavior of Near Surface Mounted CFRP Laminate Strips Strengthening Concrete Beams

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been used extensively for strengthening of bridges and buildings in the last decades. One of these innovative strengthening techniques is the near surface mounted (NSM) that consists of placing CFRP laminate strips into grooves pre-cut into the concrete cover in the tension region of the strengthened concrete member. The retrofitting technique of near surface mounting carbon fiber reinforced polymer strips is receiving more attention recently due to a number of advantages over the externajly bonded technique. This method is relatively simple and considerably enhances the bond of the mounted CFRP strips, therefore utilizing the material more effectively. However, there is insufficient data available in the existing v literature to quantify the behaviors of concrete beams strengthened with NSM CFRP laminate strips in fires. The temperature distributions in building members exposed to fires is the base of mechanical analysis of whole structures in fires. In this paper, the temperature histories in NSM CFRP laminate strips under fires are studied using the computer program TFIELD written by first author. These results demonstrated temperature in NSM CFRP laminate strips are lower than that in externally bonded CFRP strips insulated using the same insulated fireproof materials and using NSM CFRP strips is practical, and can increase the flexural capacity of concrete beams in fires.
