Calculating Method for Determination of Safety Gas Output in Air Drilling

Air drilling technology has been widely applied in China in recent years due to its outstanding advantages such as high penetration rate, quick detection of oil and gas and the farthest protection for reservoirs. However, while drilling in the production zone, the mixture of air and natural gas may trigger downhole explosion and cause serious accidents. The present on-site monitoring technology can only detect downhole explosion after the explosion has occurred, which is not enough to meet the requirement of a safe drilling operation. In this paper, the model for calculating reasonable air injection volume in drilling has been improved based on the consideration of energy loss caused by therecrush of cuttings in air drilling operations. This improvement has laid the foundation for further downhole explosion analysis. With the modified model and commonly used downhole explosion safety plate, equations for calculating safety natural gas output volume has been developed. The safety margin of natural gas output volume can be obtained. The results of case study show that the new model has better prediction than the Angle model. Meanwhile, the explosion accident can be avoided by applying the method of determining the safety natural gas output.
