Impact Toughness and Fracture Analysis of Thick TC-DT Alloy Electron Beam Welded Joints
TC4-DT is a new alpha-beta damage tolerance titanium alloy. There are no plenteous mechanical property data of TC4-DT alloy electron beam welded (EBW) joints. This paper mainly studied the impact toughness characteristics of 45 mm thick TC4-DT alloy EBW joints. The up-, middle-, and bottom-position of the joints in thickness direction were investigated respectively. The results showed that the impact toughness of the weld was higher than that of the base metal, because the platelet width was smaller in the weld metal. The up-position of the weld possessed the highest impact toughness, about 53 J/cm2. This was due to its wider fusion zone size and the different orientation of columnar grains. The fracture surface of the impacted specimen revealed a mixture of dimples and quasi-cleavage failure mechanism in both weld metal and base metal.
