Optimal slip ratio estimation using Local Polynomial Fitting

This paper is to study the problem of estimating optimal slip ratio. Firstly, the dynamics of the vehicle model used is discussed to point out the key problem of the optimal slip ratio estimation. Then, Local Polynomial Fitting is utilized to study the local property of the longitudinal friction coefficient and an empirical model of tire-road friction coefficient is selected so that the global property can be maintained as well. Finally, the optimal slip ratio estimator is implemented on a quarter vehicle ABS system and within two types of road conditions, both single road and various roads. The results show that the estimated optimal slip ratios are equal to the actual ones, regardless of the road conditions. Thus, the effectiveness of the proposed optimal slip ratio estimator is confirmed.
