Numerical Simulation of Mould Filling Process in Lost Foam Casting of Engine Cover
By using numerical simulation techniques, a three-dimensional mathematical model for the simulation of flow process, filling process, solidification process and foam gasification process of LFC in engine cover casting was proposed and computed. The results show that the process of liquid metal flow in LFC is in the advancing process of radial layers along the three-dimensional direction step by step, the promoting distribution of the velocity vector has a close relationship with the filling time. In the filling process, foam pattern gasification and decomposition appeared to be exacerbated by heat transfer in the whole casting. It obeys the sequential theory in solidification process from the top to the down, it makes great difference in casting filling order process with common cavity mold filling process. This three-dimensional model can be used to predict the defects and optimize the casting design in the LFC production.
