EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON MACROSCOPIC SIZE EFFECT OF LOWDENSITY POROUS MATERIALS IN DYNAMIC COMPRESSION PRECESS
The advantages of low-density porous materials include their characteristics of specific strength, shock absorption and so on. These have led to increased interest in their possible application as lightweight absorber, especially in packaging damage critical components of automobiles. An important issue in the mechanical analysis of the material behaviors is the effect of substance in their cellular. Especially, the effect should be discussed to evaluate the compression behaviors of the materials in their compression process. In this paper, the mechanical behaviors of the porous materials are inspected with the different size of specimens. The variation caused by the difference is experimentally observed by drop impact test for the materials. The level of plateau stress in the compression process is targeted to the inspections because it is the most significant characteristic of the materials and is useful to evaluate the behaviors. The foam of polystyrene with closed cellular structure is adopted as one of the materials. The observed difference shows that the effect of the substance should be considered in the mechanical analysis of the deformation problems of the porous materials.
