Structures and Properties of Kapok Fiber
The structures and properties of kapok fibers were characterized and compared with cotton fiber (Gherbaceum and G hirsutum). The results show that kapok fiber has an average length of 19.5 mm,close to Gherbaceum fiber, the fineness of kapok fiber is finer than that of cotton fiber, and the width is close to G hirsutum fibers. Cotton fiber look like ribbons, rolled in a helicoidal manner around the axis while Kapok fiber without convolutes. The feature of infrared spectrogram of kapok fiber is similar to cotton fibers, but it indicates that lignin existed in kapok fiber. The XRD intensity profile of kapok fiber shows the well-resolved spectrum of Cellulose I and the crystallinity of kapok fiber is 46.4%,below cotton fibers 70.3%.The strength and elongation of kapok fiber is lower than cotton fibers significantly because its thinner cell wall and lower crystallinity.
