Fabrication and Characterization of Mesoporous Calcium Silicate/silk Fibroin Composite Films

A well-defined mesoporous structure of calcium silicate (MCS) with high specific surface area was synthesized using surfactant P123 (triblock copolymer) as template, and its composite films with silk fibroin (SF) were fabricated by solvent-casting method. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis showed that random coil and βsheet structure co-existed in the SF films. The bioactivity of the composite film was evaluated by soaking in a simulated body fluid (SBF),and formation of a hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) layer was determined by XRD and FESEM. The results showed that the MCS/SF composite film was bioactive as it induced the formation of HCA on the surface of the composite film after soaking in SBF for 7 days. Consequently, the incorporation of MCS into the SF film can enhance the bioactivity of the film, which suggests that the MCS/SF composite film may be a potential biomaterial for bone tissue engineering.
