Modification of Mulberry Silk by Calcium Salt Treatment and Epoxy Crosslinking

Mulberry silks were modified by calcium salt treatment and epoxy crosslinking with glycerin triglycidyl ether (GTGE),and the silk fibers with porous structure and preferable tenacity were obtained. The effect of temperature, time and catalyst sodium carbonate on the crosslinking reaction of silk fibers had been investigated. The change in the structure and the physical properties of silk fibers after calcium salt treatment and epoxy crosslinking had been studied. The separating behavior of microfibers occurred on the surface of silk fibers after calcium salt treatment, and porous structure formed in the interior of silk. This porous structure of silk was enlarged by subsequent epoxy crosslinking, and accordingly the moisture conduction of silk fibers was improved remarkably. Breaking strength, breaking elongation and wet elastic resilience of silk fibers increased evidently after modified, and the modified silks exhibited a better flexibility.
