A Durable Flame-retardant Finish for Cotton
Flame-retardant (FR) finish of textiles is an important technique to prevent fire disaster. Textiles, including various synthetic and natural polymers, are often the primary source of ignition and contribute to rapid fire spread due to their highly ignitable nature. However, without textiles,it will be impossible for daily human activities and for the surroundings,it will not have the desired aesthetics. Currently,it is relatively easy to impart flame retardancy to synthetic fibres in the fibre spinning process via the blending incorporation techniques. However,a post-finishing with FR chemicals is necessary for natural fibres. With the increasing awareness of sustainability and diminishing of the potential pollution,it is necessary to develop finishing chemicals and processes friendly to environment and people. The carbon foot-print and chemical toxicity in FR finishing should be reduced as much as possible.
