Preserving Wool Fibre Quality--Principle for Processing Australian Superfine Wool

Processing superfine wool is technically challenging both during mechanical processing for the production of tops and when top dyeing. This is mainly because superfine wool fibre is very flexible and has a high tendency to entangle during processing. To address this important issue a project entitled “Enhancing Chinas Capacity for Processing Superfine Australian Wool was carried out in 2008-2009 in collaboration with a Chinese top making mill and nine worsted spinning mills. The results showed there were large variations in yarn quality and spinning performance between the nine mills, which reflected the differences between the mills in top dyeing, recombing and spinning qualities. The results showed damage to the wool fibre in processing was the most significant issue. It is concluded that preserving wool fibre quality is central to successful superfine wool processing.
