Research on Slenderizing Wool Fiber by NaOH /Glycol Solution

NaOH was used as alkaline agent and glycol was used as solvent in this paper, slenderizing wool fibre by alkaline organic solution. Orthogonal experimental approach was used to study the alkali concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on wool diameter base rate, etc. Investigate after alkali processing organic wool of breaking tenacity, regain and the other indicators of change. Analyze the structure of wool before and after processing and chemical structure. Examine glycol recycling. The results show that the best slenderizing was achieved when the concentration of the NaOH glycol solution was 1.1%, treatment time was 80 minutes, and the treatment of temperature was 70oC. Breaking tenacity increased with the decrease of the wool diameter. Regain increased with the decrease of the wool diameter. The former wool scale structure of the surface significantly, reduced after treatment. IR spectra show that the surface of the treated wool produced a new group. It reveals that alkali refining processing organic solution was not simply dissolved, but with chemical reactions. Glycol could be recycled. The scope of this study could be achieved within 80% of its recovery. This will cut down costs and play an important role in protection of the environment.
