A Comparative Study on Wool Fiber Surface Modified by DCCA, Kroy-Resin and ECO

The properties of wool fibers treated with DCCA (Basolan 88), Kroy-resin and ECO were compared with frictional coefficients using an Y151 fiber coefficient of friction tester, surface modification observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical composition evaluated with FTIR. The changes in frictional and surface morphology of the single fibers are presented. Experimental results showed that some scales on the oxidized fiber surface were partially cleaved and some grooves generated. Coating resin on the chlorinated wool fibers results in a significant reduction in the fiber coefficient of friction, as the resin smoothes the protruding edges of the fiber scales. It also reduces the directional friction effect (DFE) of the fibers. FTIR results suggest no evident changes in the chemical composition of the fiber after the treatment.
