Application of Sol-Gel Technology to Functional Finish of Wool
A shrink-resist treatment of wool with sol-gel technique is introduced. Sol solutions were prepared by using organically modified ceramics (e.g. γ-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, GPTMS). An influence of pre-hydrolyzed speed and sol stability on pH value, concentration, temperature and different solvents was investigated. The result showed that the sol solution could be prepared in 30 minutes without using alcohol and with a shelf life in one year. The shrink resist effects of the treated wool by the sol with different recipes and treating conditions were researched. After that, the industrial trials with GPTMS sol solution were carried out. The result proved that the treatment by the sol with pad-dry-cure process can reach the pass level of Woolmark TM 31. On the other hand, the Industrial trials showed that the cotton/wool blend knitting yarns have an effective anti-pilling effect if the yarns were treated with the sol. Based on the discoloration of AEAPTMS (N-(β-aminoethyl)-γaminopropyltrimethoxysilane) with a dyestuff (C.I. Acid Green 16), it can be seen by an optical microscope that the sol particles not only adsorbed on the fiber surface, they penetrated the interior of the wool fibers and evenly distributed among them. Grafting/blocking APTES (γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane) to polyurethane can reduce the curing temperature for saving energy and avoiding the yellowing of wool.
