Complexation of Synthetic and Natural Insecticides by Cyclodextrins for Both Safe Application and Controlled Release
Cyclodextrins are known to form complexes with hydrophobic compounds, e.g. with insecticides. In this work, a series of different synthetic and natural active agents which are used especially for insect-proofing of wool textiles were selected for theoretical and preparative studies on their complexation by β-cyclodextrin. The energetically preferred β-cyclodextrin complexes of the selected ingredients were calculated by computer based Monte Carlo force field simulations. The resulting ranking list with the theoretically most stable β-cyclodextrin insecticide complexes is presented. It shows that greater molecules form less stable complexes with β-cyclodextrin than suitable smaller molecules. Based on these calculations, β-cyclodextrin insecticide complexes were prepared and characterized by different analytical methods. Studies by head space GC/MS analysis show that the release process depends on the guest molecule and on the present water content.
