Neem Extracts as Insect Resist Agents for Wool

Neem extracts were investigated for their potential as natural insect resist agents for wool. At first, stability studies were performed which showed that the ingredients of Neem extracts are not stable at higher temperatures (T > 50 °C). Thus, Neem extracts cannot be applied onto wool by the conventionally used bath exhaustion procedures. Low temperature procedures have to be employed for the application of Neem extracts onto wool. In this study, higher amounts of Neem extracts could be applied onto wool by padding or spraying procedures. Microencapsulation is a further potential method for applying Neem extracts onto wool textiles. The stability of wool finished with Neem extracts to light and during washing was investigated. The biological effectiveness of Neem extracts on wool was determined by bioassays with the larvae of Tineola bisselliella and the Australian carpet beetle.
