Effects of Weak Sodium Hydroxide Solution Pretreatment on the Topology, Dye Uptake and Mechanical Properties of Wool
Strong alkali conditions are well known to dissolve wool fibers. However, weak and cold alkaline solutions leave a very minimal damage but can have positive effects on dye uptake. In this work, two kinds of fine and coarse wool fibers were pretreated in cold sodium hydroxide solutions for up to 30 minutes and then dyed with Acid Naphtol Red 6B. The effect of alkaline pre-treatment on the dye uptake, topology and the strength was investigated. It was observed that dye uptake is positively affected by the weak alkaline treatment. It was also observed that mechanical properties of the fibers benefit from this pretreatment. Topology investigations showed that very low concentrations of sodium hydroxide does not affect the scales to a considerable extent.
