Study on Preparation of Nano-silica/Polymer Containing Short Fluoroalkyl Chains Composite Emulsion and Its Water Repellency
A nano-silica/polymer containing short fluoroalkyl chains composite emulsion (PFA-SiO2) was prepared via in-situ emulsion polymerization. The chemical composition, particle size and thermal stability of the composite emulsion were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, particle size analyzer and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The water repellency of the composite emulsion was tested through treating the polyester fabric. The surface morphology and elemental composition of treated fabrics were respectively characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the thermal stability of the composite emulsion had been enhanced, and it was of narrow size distribution with average particle size 62.15 nm. The successful encapsulation of silica into the composite emulsion increased surface roughness of the treated fabric which exhibited superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 155°.
