Preparation of Transition Metal Ions-Wool Complexes Using a Simple Exhaustion Method

In order to obtain a low-cost heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, wool was used to coordinate with FeCl3 or CuSO4 and their mixture to prepare a series of transition metal ions-wool complexes using an exhaustion process. Some factors affecting the coordination process such as the nature and initial concentration of transition metal ion, temperatures and pH value were investigated with respect to the metal content of the complexes. Moreover, a Fe-Cu bimetal ions-wool complex was also obtained by a combined coordination of wool fiber with Fe (III) and Cu (II) ions in water. The results indicated that wool fiber has much higher coordination performance with Fe (III) ion than Cu (II) ion at the same conditions. The metal content of the complexes was greatly affected by the solution pH. Increasing temperature and initial concentration of transition metal ion lead to the complexes with higher metal content. The Fe-Cu bimetallic wool complex has the lower metal content than Fe (III) or Cu (II) wool complex.
