Atmospheric Plasma-wide Purpose Instrument for Wool Finishing: from Cleaning and Anti-shrinking Effect to the Modification of the Fiber Cortex

Original CIVEN Apparatus (air DBD) was applied for the studies of different finishing effects on wool fabrics, in the function of the applied energy. At plasma treatment energy of 80 J/cm2, the cleaning effect (elimination of adhered lipids) was obtained on unscoured knitted fabric. At lower applied energy the phenomenon of fast decay for the obtained wetting was observed. This effect is supposed to be due to the fast conversion of the partially oxidized adhered lipids on the fiber surface. The last was studied by wicking, extraction method and FTIR-ATR analysis. Anti-shrinking effect of “machine wash level was obtained on knitted fabric with plasma treatment energy of 100 J/cm2. At our opinion, the mild antishrinking effect can have different nature with respect to the “total easy care anti-shrinking effect. Accordingly, different approaches are supposed to be necessary for the handling recovery in these cases. The results of SEM and AFM characterizations and the comparisons of anti-pilling effect are discussed. At higher treatment energies applied on single fibers, the penetrative oxidation of the fibers during plasma treatment was observed. Micro Raman characterizations of fibers, performed in the post treatment period, present the phenomenon of continuous oxidation of fiber with ambient oxygen.
