Fabrication of Conducting Polymer Thin Films on Poly(ethylene terephthalate) Substrates

Conducting polymer thin films were fabricated onto poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics by a method based in-situ chemical polymerization involving two steps of monomer adsorption and oxidation processes. Effects of initial concentration and temperature on monomer uptake, and influence of monomer/oxidant concentration ratio on the sheet resistance have been discussed in this paper. The production of the electroactive form of polyaniline was confirmed through attenuated total reflection flourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Microscopy studies suggested the existence of an adsorption film after the monomer sorption step and the formation of uniform micro-particle coatings on the surface of the textiles as the oxidative polymerization accomplished.
