Characterization of Wool Fabrics with KrCl Excilamp Treatment

A KrCl excilamp (λ=222 nm) was used to surface modify wool fabrics. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique were applied to analyse the change of the surface of the treated wools. The relative colour strength (K/S) and brightness (L*) values of the dyeing wool fabrics were measured as well. The results showed that the outer surface of the fibres was etched after excilamp treatment, and some particles emerged on the surface scales. The excilamp-treated fibres possessed high concentration of oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen, as well as increased hydrophilic groups, such as C-O, C=O, O-C=O and SOx-. After treatment for 2 min the K/S value of treated dyeing fabrics had an increase of 6.567 and the L value had a decrease of 4.365.
