Shrink-proofing of Wool Fabrics with Savinase Enzyme

The Savinase enzyme was used for shrink-proof finishing of wool fabrics. With the help of a H2O2 preoxidation, the wool fabrics were undergone a subsequent enzymatic process. The influence of pH, enzyme concentration, treating temperature and time was explored with orthogonal experimental method. The levels of each factor for orthogonal experiments were established by parallel single factor experiments. The optimal condition given by orthogonal experiments was as below. That is enzyme concentration 1%, temperature 50, time ℃ 45min.and pH 8. The relative area shrinkage of the fabric treated under this optimal condition was reduced to 2.05% as compared with that of the control sample was 9.31%. The handle, lustre and whiteness of the treated fabric were also improved remarkably. The results were in consistence with those given by KES objective appraisal. Both the preoxidation and the enzymatic processes showed much more eco-friendly features than Hercosett one, therefore, this may be a promising process for the future.
