Cyclodextrin-based Microgels as Carriers of Insecticides for Wool Textiles

In this work, a new method for the modification of textiles with cyclodextrin-based microgels is described. Cyclodextrins are able to form complexes with hydrophobic guest molecules in aqueous environment. Here, the complexation potential of cyclodextrin-based microgels is demonstrated for the insecticide permethrin. After complexation in cyclodextrin microgels, insecticides can be applied easily, homogeneously and safely on wool fibres. Due to the complexation, the sensitive, active ingredients are protected from UV-degradation and early release in high amounts. Bioassay tests against the larvae of Tineola bisselliella and Anthrenocerus australis show that the activity of the ingredients does not decrease after complexation in cyclodextrin gels, but results in protection of the wool fibres against degradation by insect larvae.
