Thiol-functionalised Oligoglycidols for the Fixation of Creases in Wool Fabrics
The physiologically safe thiol-functional polymers (thiomers) and oligomers are of interest for a variety of applications. Thiomers are yet used as drug delivery systems in medicine. Further potential applications of thiol-functional oligomers or polymers are the easy care finishing of textiles, achieving permanent creases in wool fabrics or permanent waving of human hair. Thiol-functionalised oligoglycidols with different molecular architectures were developed for the application onto wool fabrics. For the synthesis of linear oligoglycidols, acetal protected glycidols were used. After deprotection, the oligoglycidols were cross-linked with 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid chloride. Reductive splitting of the disulfide bonds results in water-soluble, thiol-group containing oligoglycidols with molecular masses of 860-1200 g/mol in high yields. The thiol-functional oligoglycidols were applied to wool materials from a phosphate buffered solution of neutral to slightly basic pH. The wool was treated in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant at 40 °C for 20 to 60 minutes. Raman spectroscopy and crease angle measurements were used to prove the success of the treatment. The thiol-functional oligoglycidols were shown to penetrate into the wool fibre, to cleave the cystine bonds and to induce the rearrangement of the disulfide bridges. Thermal treatment completes the crease fixation. Thus, thiol-functional oligoglycidols were shown to achieve a very good crease fixation in wool fabrics.
