Recovery of Wool Keratin from Tannery Unhairing Liquor by Ultrafiltration with Polysulfone Membrane

Tannery unhairing liquor contains a large quantity of dissolved keratin and keratin hydrolysate which constitute a source of pollution that is difficult and expensive to treat. In order to reduce the pollution, the keratin and the keratin hydrolysate were recovered from the spent unhairing liquor by ultrafiltration with polysulfone membrane. A keratin with higher molecular weight (42-66kDa) and a keratin hydrolysate with lower molecular weight (9.8-18kDa) in the form of a slightly colored solid were obtained respectively. The results show that almost all the sodium sulphide as well as the 92% of inorganic salt can be removed from the concentrated solution by the concentration and dialysis during the ultrafiltration. The keratin deposited from the concentrated solution in the first step during the ultrafiltration accounts for 56% of proteinous substance in the unhairing liquor. The keratin hydrolysate that deposited from the concentrated solution with the help of acidification in the second step, accounts for 30% of proteinous substance in the unhairing liquor. The recovered keratin and keratin hydrolysate that totally account for 86% of proteinous substances in unhairing liquor, have a reasonably good amino acid distribution with the exception of the cystine content, and have potential applications in many areas.
