Effects of Polymerizable Emulsifier on the Properties of Polyacrylate/Nano-SiO2 Leather Finishing Agent

Polyacrylate/nano–SiO2 composite was prepared through semi-continuous emulsion polymerization stabilized with polymerizable surfactant ammonium allyloxtmethylate nonylphenol ethoxylates sulfate (DNS-86), and the mixture of conventional surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-400). The performance of the composite with different surfactants was compared. Application in leather finishing show that the latex stabilized with DNS-86 exhibit remarkably better resistance to water uptake and better performance of vapor permeability. Dynamics Laser Scattering (DLS) indicated that the Ζeta potential of the latex containing DNS-86 was higher than that of the latex stabilized with the mixture of SDS and PEG-400. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polyacrylate /nano-SiO2 composite containing DNS-86 (Tg = -5.85 °C) was higher than that of the composite had SDS and PEG-400(Tg = -7.92°C).
