Synthesis and Application of Amphoteric Polymer Dimethyl Diallyl Ammonium Chloride/ Acrylic Acid as Less-chrome Tanning Agent

Amphoteric polymer dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride /acrylic acid (PDM-AA) was prepared by free-radical copolymerization in water. The monomer conversion and rotary viscosity of copolymer were studied. The structure and the thermal properties of PDM-AA were characterized by FTIR and DSC respectively. FT-IR pattern revealed that the copolymerization reaction of dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride and acrylic acid was successful. DSC analysis showed that in this experimental condition, glass-transition temperature does not appear. Compared with 2% chrome tannage, PDM-AA combined with 2% chrome tannage was applied in leather making process. The results show that the shrinkage temperature of leather tanned by PDM-AA combined with 2% chrome tannage can be raised by 29.4, ℃ the hydrothermal stability, the thickincrease, mechanical properties and the absorbability of fatliquor and dyes are far higher than 2% chrome tanned leather.
