Effect of Crystallinity on the Modulus of Permanent Waved Hair

Human hair is a complicated disulfide cross-linked system comprising of the intermediate filaments (IFs) with α-helical materials and globular matrix proteins. During the permanent waving treatment, the occurrences of a considerable decrease of the intermolecular SS cross-links in the hair and a marked decrease of the extension modulus in water were demonstrated. An attempt was made whether the lowering of the modulus is related to the degree of crystallinity (DC). The samples were prepared by reduction with thioglycolic acid and subsequent oxidation. The simulation of equatorial X-ray intensity curve was performed by assuming Lorentzean line shape. Four lines were obtained. Two with relatively sharp peaks at 2 θ= 9° and 19.3° corresponding to α and β-sheet. Another with an amorphous peak at a vicinity of 2 θ= 24°. The fourth curve is no peak in the range of 2 θfrom 5 to 35°. The change of the amounts of α -and β-crystals has been found to be little through the treatments. Conclusion was derived that the DC is not dependent on the modulus of treated hair in water.
