Effect of Laundering on Prickle of Light-Weight Worsted Woven Wool and Wool Blend Fabrics

In this paper, the effect of laundering on the prickle of light-weight woven wool and wool blend fabrics was studied. Total 16 fabrics were studied, which included 5 wool fabrics made from shrink-proof tops, 4 normal wool fabrics and 7 wool/polyester blend fabrics. The laundering processes were based on GB/T 8629-2001. Two water temperatures 20℃ and 40℃ were used, respectively. The prickle of the fabrics was evaluated before and after laundering by using forearm test at the conditions 22℃ ± 2℃ temperature and RH = 55% ± 5% and yarn surface fiber diameter measurement by using a microscope with 400~500 magnification. It was found that, after laundering, the fabrics became pricklier, the number of yarn surface fibers increased, while the mean diameter of yarn surface fibers had no significant change. It was also found there was no significant difference on fabric prickle and yarn surface fibers between laundering at 20℃ and 40℃ water.
