Drilling and Completion Technology Research of Blowout and Lost Circulation Co -existence in Sour Gas Well
The thief zones, which, are encountered in drilling sour gas wells in the gas fields of Sichuan and Chongqing, need to be temporarily blocked by spotting the special lost circulation material (LCM) or plugs to regain returns and kill the well or using suitable completing technology. Furthermore, corresponding emergency response plans un der the complex circumstances such as a combination of lost returns and the kick when there is neither pressure win dow for safe drilling nor suitable conditions for completing a well. The following considerations shall be taken: ( 1) The accurate position of lost zones and pay zones shall be confirmed through an analysis of the formation pressure and pressure bearing capacity of all zones when lost returns and the kick occurs at the long intervals of open hole where various pressure systems exist. The responding program shall be made to stop loss and kill the well. ( 2 ) The LCM with significant pertinence to the rock characteristics of lost zone shall be selected and used to seal off the lost zone during the drilling operation along with suitable stopping loss progress. ( 3 ) The borehole pressure shall be kept in balance all the time using top -up technology according to the combination of lost returns and the kick. (4) The permanent LMC with high compressive strength after being solidified may be chosen when mud loss does not occur in pay zones, otherwise temporary plugging material which can give the utmost protection to the pay zones shall be used when mud loss happens in pay zones and stopping loss is deemed necessary. (5 ) The options of ce menting and completing techniques must meet both the requirements of gas production technology and the need of safe operation under the complex down -hole problems such as a combination of lost returns and the kick in sour gas wells.
