Horizontal Well Drilling Practice in Gas Reservoirs Below an Ultra -Thick Salt Layer

The target zone in region XX is below the 400 ~ 700 -meter salt -gypsum bed. The dissolution and creeping of the salt bed and the presence of high -pressure saline all lead to frequent occurrence of key seats, overgauging and undergauging, which results in various engineering hazards such as salt -out sticking, undergauging sticking, key seat sticking, debris settling sticking, casing collapse and well blowout etc. The vertical well drilling success ratio in the region was about 50%,and no directional or horizontal well was drilled previously. This paper analyzes drilling -related challenges during drilling a gas reservoir below ultra -thick gypsum. Study has also been made on the op timal horizontal hole size, kick off point, build up rate, well trajectory profile and casing program as well as bit type selection, drilling tool assembly design, drilling parameters optimization, well path monitoring, drilling fluid system, cementing and safe drilling in salt -gypsum bed, thereby corresponding measures have been made out. Well Sam35 -1H,Sam36 -1D and Sam -3-1H have been successfully drilled with better drilling performance, which provides val uable design and operation experiences for horizontal well drilling in gas reservoirs of similar kind.
