Design and Practice of Auto -control Systems for Managed Pressure Drilling

Managed pressure drilling(MPD)is an advanced drilling method which can effectively solve the problems in the course of drilling, such as well kick, well loss, well collapse and well struck. Consequently, a new suit of advanced MPD equipment was developed, including manifold system, back -pump system and auto -control cen ter, which can control bottom -hole pressure(BHP)with more precision. The auto -control system is the kernel of MPD equipment and has three significant characteristics: an advanced control method, a simple — effective control system and a strong control function. Firstly, a real -time hydraulic model of MPD, a hydraulic -pneumatic system transmitting control and a choke control mode were established. They were then integrated into an advanced pressure control method. Secondly, the auto -control system uses the FF (Field Foundation) field -bus control technology which has more advanced modularization than a PLC( Programmable Logic Controller) and makes the wiring work simple and the discrete monitor and convergent control more effective. Lastly, using a micro -flow control function, the system can monitor and control the pressure and flow -rate of the drilling fluid which can in turn control the BHP more exactly. Consequently, it can avoid accidents of well kick and well loss effectively. The preliminary indoor tests show that the pressure control method is effective and the operating performance of the system is essential to meet the requirements of control accuracy.
