Comparative Performance Analysis of Different Proxy Mobile IPv6 Fast Handover Schemes

Next generation wireless networks are expected to integrate and coordinate heterogeneous communication networks to enable network access ubiquity. This integration of different networks comes at the cost of performance degradation when handovers occur among the networks during a mobility event. Thus, there is an emerged need for effective mobility management protocols to support ubiquitous network access by providing seamless handover. Mobile IPv6 was proposed to support global mobility. However, it presented long handover latencies that dont comply with the requirements of real time applications such as voice and video. In addition, it requires modification to the mobile node protocol stack. Internet Engineering Task Force Network-based Localized Mobility Management (NETLMM) introduced Proxy Mobile IPv6 to solve the problem of long handover latency. In this paper, we analyze and compare different fast handover schemes in terms of handover latency and normalized handover values to enlighten the decision making of implementing these protocols.
