Substrate Effects on the Performance of Photoconductive Antennas

Photoconductive antennas are one of the common emitters and receivers in THz applications and measurements. However, the performance of the THz photoconductive antennas is strongly affected by the substrate due to their working frequency range which is not as severe for antennas working in the RF/Microwave spectrum. In this paper, an analytical and numerical study is conducted to identify the substrate effects. Since there have been some papers dealing with the infinitely large substrate effects, this paper focused on the semi finite-size-substrate effects. The obtained results indicate that the radiated power to air and that through the substrate have some periodic behaviour. The peaks and dips of the power in both sides are related to the wavelength and thickness of the substrate. Some simulated results are also included to prove the theory. These findings can aid in design of efficient photoconductive antennas.
