A STUDY OF HUMAN FACTORS IN CELLULAR MANUFACTURING BASED ON EXPERIMENT RESULTS OF INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM LABORATORY

In order to understand cellular manufacturing and learn how to design a manufacturing line, an experimental lesson entitled as Industrial System Laboratory is offered to the students in Fukushima University who are required to assemble a toy robot METAMO through one person cell and a conveyor line respectively. This paper makes a statistical investigation of the impact of human factor such as learning and the aptitude of operators on performance of cellular manufacturing. The investigation is based on the assembly times measured during this laboratory. A comparison is made with the production line system. It has been demonstrated that the efficiency of cellular manufacturing depend strongly on the aptitude of operators and so worker assignment strategy is very important to improve the performance of cellular manufacturing.
