MANUFACTURING CELL FORMATION WITH PRODUCTION DATA USING FACTOR ANALYSIS

Aiming at the shortcomings in former studies, this paper presents a cell formation approach based on factor analysis clustering using production data. The proposed approach is carried out in three phases. In the first phase, the correlation matrix is used as a combined similarity coefficient matrix which incorporated the real-field data such as the operation sequences, production volumes, processing times and machine load. In the second phase, machine cells are identified by applying factor analysis to the combined similarity coefficient matrix. In the third stage, an integer-programming model with minimizing intercellular movements of parts is used to assign parts to the identified machine cells. To illustrate the validity of the proposed approach, this approach was applied to a real life problem from a workshop of a manufacturing plant. The results of a comparative study based on multiple performance criteria show that the proposed approach is very effective, efficient and practical.
