RESEARCH ON THE GOVERNANCE MECHANISMS DECISIONS IN DYNAMIC KNOWLEDGE ALLIANCE

While researchers in alliance management have identified the importance of dynamic governance, the sequence links between the initial decision and the later decisions have not yet been incorporated into the alliance strategy and the governance choices. Based on the sequence links, this paper proposes an approach of decision path. We employ the approach to analyze the impact of the four factors including commercial environment, common benefits, private benefits and management costs on the management decisions. We discover that these factors play different roles in the alliance decision. The commercial environment, private benefits and the knowledge sharing related management costs are crucial to the alliance strategy and the governance choices, but the other factors have contingent influence. We also find that the utilization of the four alliance management mechanisms including the knowledge sharing mechanism (KSM), knowledge protection mechanism (KPM), coordination mechanism (CM), and exiting restriction mechanism (ERM) is closely related to the sequence links between different decisions. Hence, in order to control the alliance risks and facilitate the alliance success, the research of alliance management should take into account the sequence links between different decisions.
