OUTSOURCING, FDI AND DEMAND SHIFT OF SKILLED LABOR IN CHINA
One of the effects of FDI, which correspond to an increase in outsourcing by multinationals, is to shift production towards relatively skill-intensive products thereby increasing the relative demand for skilled labor. In this paper, we introduced the theoretical framework from Feenstra and Hanson (1995) and studied the impact of FDI on wage share of the skilled labor in China using provincial-level data for the period 1995 to 2003. By dividing China into east, middle and west areas, we compared such effects among them. Our results show that the growth in FDI is negatively correlated with the relative demand for skilled labor in the East and Middle China, while this relationship in the West China is significantly positive.
